Accounts clerks or bookkeepers are responsible for keeping the books for a business.  When dealing with an accounts clerk or bookkeepers day to day tasks it’s all about scrutiny and patience. To become an accountant’s clerk you need to be confident with numbers and work well in a group. Knowledge of computers and technology is an advantage since you will be dealing with accounting software and applications. Most of the role is done on computer. It is important as well to be good with details and very accurate in your work.  Communication skills and being organised are essential to the job.

Hours & Conditions:

Accounts clerk do their job in an office from Monday to Friday usually. Self-employed workers can schedule the hours of work they do in a week flexibly to suit them best.  Often there is an option of part-time work in this field.

How to become an accounts clerk or bookkeeper: Qualifications

Completion of a VET qualification in bookkeeping or accounts administration will get you started in this career. You may opt for distance or online education if that works for you. Courses are widely available.

There is a minimum education and experience prerequisite for those who want to work as a tax agent or Business Activity Statement (BAS) agent, and you must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board. www.tpb.gov.au
