How to become a Criminologist

While the police are solving a crime, there’s someone else thinking about why it was committed, how it was committed and how can they stop it from happening again. This is the role of the criminologist.

Criminologist study the nature of crime and its causes and effects. They interview criminals and victims of crime, and attend crime scenes to gather information. They analyse data to see if there are patterns or emerging trends in the crimes.  Using the data they produce statistics and reports for police, the government or justice system.

They understand the justice system, and propose changes in policies or laws to aid crime prevention and keep up with new and emerging styles of crime.

To become a criminologist you should be open-minded and not judgemental. You would need to be someone who has the ability to think fast and has an interest in human behavior. A large part of the role involves statistics so strong numeracy is key.  Working with in this field requires strong self-confidence.

Hours & Conditions:

Criminologist work a standard number of hours per week and depending on your role you may be on-call to attend crime scenes. It mostly office based and usually you’d be working for the government, educational institutions or the private sector. Part of the job is often to visit prisons or correctional centres for interviews.
