How to become an Industrial Engineer
Are you good at solving problems? Do you enjoy thinking about designing systems and processes?
What is an Industrial Engineer?
Industrial engineers are involved in planning and streamlining operations and production processes. They make sure that workers, machines, materials, information and energy are used efficiently to produce a product or service. To do this, they may design the layout of equipment, materials and workspaces in a way that maximizes comfort and efficiency. They will also need to coordinate and implement standards for quality control and performance.
As an industrial engineer, you would plan and create the sequence of operations used in an industrial setting to apply resources efficiently. You will also need to estimate what the effects of product design and process changes are, in order to determine the potential cost, labour and safety changes. The management and other members of an organization would coordinate with you to develop standards for production and design.
Being an industrial engineer would require you to have strong analytical and problem solving skills, creativity, and good practical technical skills. Because you will be coordinating with other engineering professionals and managers, you will also need to have good oral and written communication skills.
Hours & Conditions:
Industrial engineers may work in an office or in the setting they are working to improve. For instance, if you are trying to streamline hospital operations, you may need to watch how the staff carry out their tasks. Similarly, if you are trying to troubleshoot production problems, you might observe workers assemble parts in a factory. You would spend a lot of time working with a computer to analyse all the data that’s been collected and devise solutions to the challenges being faced.
Industrial engineers who are employed full time will usually complete standard work hours from Monday to Friday. If you are working in a manufacturing firm, you may be asked to work shifts which could include night or the weekend.
How to become an Industrial Engineer: Qualifications
To become an industrial engineer you would need to have a degree in engineering with a major in manufacturing or mechanical engineering. Getting into these courses would require you to gain your senior secondary school certificate or an equivalent. Some of the subjects you could take prior to entering university are English, mathematics, chemistry and physics.
Graduates of industrial engineering courses may be eligible to apply as members of Engineers Australia www.engineersaustralia.org.au
